Young creatives take over PRIME with Fotonow and the King’s Trust

5 November, 2024

Last month we had a great time hosting 13 young people for a five-day creative media programme, in collaboration with the King’s Trust (formerly the Prince’s Trust) and Prime Skatepark.

Get Started in Skate Film and Photography‘ provided a fantastic opportunity for participants to explore the world of photography, filmmaking, and skate culture.

The week kicked off at Fotonow studios with hands-on camera training, led by Jess and Emma from the team. The group quickly connected and got to grips with the stills and video equipment, beginning to envision their creative projects for the week ahead.

At Prime Skatepark on Tuesday, Jess and Louie guided the group in producing social media marketing reels. They captured skaters in action, filming a “how-to” skateboarding short, and interviewed skaters and park owners about their journey in the sport.

The momentum continued on Wednesday with additional filming before transitioning to editing skills. Louie and Ross from the Fotonow team led the session, bringing Fotonow’s iMacs along to enable on-site post-production at Prime.

Thursday featured an inspiring workshop with local professional photographer Josh Greet, who shared his journey to creating successful commercial work and then guided the group through portrait photography techniques. His expertise in lighting, composition, and editing boosted everyone’s confidence.

By Friday, the group was ready to showcase their work. After final editing and photo printing at Fotonow studios, they headed to Prime to install their exhibition. The group were joined by photographer Tobie Loates, who also installed his Ocean City Sk8 portrait series and gave a talk to the group about the work.

Friends, family, and local supporters gathered in the afternoon for a celebration, where the young people proudly presented their prints and films. Feedback from the group highlighted the week’s impact, with one participant appreciating the “hands-on experience with the cameras” and another emphasising the joy of connecting with others throughout the programme.

This collaborative project was made possible through the support of the King’s Trust, Prime Skatepark, and Fotonow’s project funder, The National Lottery Community Fund – we are grateful for their commitment to creating opportunities for young people!
