Film In A Day with DHSB!
We recently hosted an exciting ‘Film in a Day’ workshop with students from Devonport High School for Boys in Plymouth, providing a unique opportunity for young aspiring filmmakers from across DHSB’s year groups to learn the ropes of filmmaking in just one day.
Led by our own Jess Scott and supported by Fotonow volunteer Will Thomas, the workshop began with an engaging icebreaker where students shared their favourite films. The morning session was filled with interactive learning, as students explored the stages of production, roles in film, and the four pillars of filmmaking: cinematography, sound, editing, and production design. With a script in hand and a box of costumes and props generously provided by Plymouth Scrap Store, the students eagerly set out to create their films.
Split into two groups, the students voted on their film genres and got to work. One group chose to create a romcom, while the other went for a sci-fi theme. Throughout the day, they filmed various scenes in and around Royal William Yard, fully embracing their roles and the filmmaking process. The day culminated in a screening of their films, showcasing their hard work and creativity.
Feedback from the students highlighted the most enjoyable parts of the day, with many citing the fun of the shoot and the post-production process. When asked about their learnings, students mentioned gaining a better understanding of cinematography, editing, and shot composition.
The workshop not only allowed students to connect with each other over a shared passion for film but also equipped them with new filmmaking skills. It was a day filled with creativity, teamwork, and a lot of fun.
We love providing creative media enrichment activities for young people in Plymouth, and our Film in a Day workshop is always popular. We’re looking forward to working with more schools and inspiring even more young filmmakers!
